Bollywood fan or not, chances are we all have seen at least one film with a Kapoor star in it, or perhaps a film shot in their family-owned RK Studios in Chembur. Mera Naam Joker, anyone? Known as ‘The First Family of Indian Cinema’,  Kapoors and the history of Indian cinema go hand-in-hand. The members of the earlier generations of the Kapoor family gave their all to make Indian cinema reach where it is at present. A family with five generations of descendants over 93 years in the Hindi film industry, Kapoors have been the force du jour in the Indian entertainment industry. While we are as excited about the marriage of Kapoor scion, Ranbir Kapoor with Alia Bhatt, as you probably are, here’s looking at some other notable marriages that have taken place in the Kapoor family.

1. Prithviraj Kapoor – Ramsarani Mehra-Kapoor

Starting the list with the Kapoor family patriarch, Prithviraj Kapoor, also known as ‘one of founding figures of Indian Cinema’. Prithviraj married Ramasarani Mehra (seated in the picture) in 1923. Lovingly called Chaiji by her grandchildren, Ramasarani was a mother to five children.

2. Raj Kapoor – Krishna Malhotra

The eldest son of Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor, married Krishna Malhotra in 1946. Known as the ‘Charlie Chaplin of Indian Cinema’, Kapoor, 22, hadn’t seen or met, or spoken to his would-be wife before the wedding, as theirs was an arranged alliance made by Raj’s father Prithviraj.

3. Shammi Kapoor – Geeta Bali

Shammi Kapoor broke several hearts when he decided to marry the actress Geeta Bali. They first met on the sets of Rangeen Raatein in 1955 and fell in love almost instantly. After starring in three films (Coffee House, Coca Cola, and Mohar) together and proposing the second time around, Shammi and Gita got married the same year in Banganga temple. Talking about his marriage, Shammi in an old interview with The Quint says, ” When we were taking pheras, Geeta took out a lipstick from her purse, saying, “meri maang me daal dijiye” (colour the parting of my hair with this).

4 Shashi Kapoor – Jennifer Kendal

Shashi Kapoor first met actress Jennifer Kendal in 1956 while working in a theatre group. It was love at first sight. Shashi was just twenty when he made up his mind to marry Kendal. Though Kendal’s family had a few objections about the alliance, Shashi with the help of his sister-in-law Geeta Bali, managed to overcome those, finally marrying Kendal, two years later in 1958.

5. Rishi Kapoor – Neetu Singh

Rishi and Neetu worked in several movies together from Do Dooni Chaar to Rafoo Chakkar. This hit on-screen pair took their romance offscreen by marrying each other in 1980. In what seems a strange turn of events, their marriage is now being likened to the wedding of Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in many respects.

6. Aditya Raj Kapoor – Priti

Aditya Raj Kapoor, the son of Geeta Bali and Shammi Kapoor got married in the Himalayas in 1982. Aditya’s alliance, which was arranged by his spiritual master Haidakhan Baba, and was attended by each and every member of the Kapoor family.

7. Riddhima Kapoor – Bharat Sahni

Riddhima Kapoor married her best friend Bharat Sahni, a Delhi-based industrialist, in 2006. The duo tied the knot after dating each other for four years. They have a beautiful daughter named Samara from their marriage.

8. Kareena Kapoor – Saif Ali Khan

Saifeena as they are called got married in 2012. The duo planned an intimate celebration, inviting close to a hundred people for their wedding. For her wedding, Kareena wore an heirloom piece belonging to her great-grandmother, showing that you can make sustainable fashion choices even during your wedding events.

9. Nikhil Nanda – Shweta Bachchan


Belonging to the fifth generation of the Kapoor family, Nikhil Nanda, son of Ritu Nanda (Raj Kapoor’s daughter) married Shweta Bachchan in 1997. Nikhil was just twenty-three when he walked down the aisle with Shweta.

10. Armaan Jain – Anissa Malhotra

11 Alia – Ranbir

Alia and Ranbir met way before, she made her big screen debut with Karan Johar’s ‘Student of The Year.’ Not many know this, but Alia and Ranbir were supposed to be a part of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali project titled Balika Vadhu. Alas, the film never saw the light of the day, pushing their on-screen debut together to several years. In April 2022, they got married, making the wish of their fans come true. Posting the stunning pictures from their wedding, Alia on her Instagram handle, wrote, “Today, surrounded by our family and friends, at home … in our favorite spot – the balcony we’ve spent the last 5 years of our relationship – we got married. With so much already behind us, we can’t wait to build more memories together … memories that are full of love, laughter, comfortable silences, movie nights, silly fights, wine delights and Chinese bites.
